NEUTRON MYSTERY by a sci-phy writer.

Both neutrons and protons are made of 3 quarks each.
So why does it take protons 10 to the 32nd power of YEARS to decay, while a free neutron decays in 11 MINUTES?
Something’s not right here!

Neutrons, and protons are said to be made up of 3 quarks each such that Proton: two up quarks and one down
Neutron: two down quarks and one up
But if that’s true why does a free neutron decay in 11 minutes, but a proton in 10 to the 32nd power of years!

“On average a free neutron will decay into a proton and an electron in about 11 minutes.”

“‘The proton … has long been considered to be a stable particle, but recent developments of grand unification models have suggested that it might decay with a half-life of about 10 to the power of 32 years.”
